What is confidentiality?

All staff at EMP we have duty of confidentiality to all our patients, no matter what age.

This means that our staff will not disclose anything that we discuss with you without you agreement unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Exceptional circumstances would be if there is a risk to you, or another persons health, safety or welfare.

What is consent?

If you consent it means that you agree to an examination test or treatment and understand the reasons for it.

What age can I consent to medical treatment?

There is no age limit, as long as you are assessed as competent. Any young person regardless of age can independently seek medical or nursing advice or care.

A young person is said to be competent if the doctor or nurse believes that they are capable of understanding the choices of treatment and their consequences.
